What's going on in Love Island?

So it’s Love Island time again and we get to observe people coupling up and forming relationships. Of course, with this comes conflict and how it is or isn’t resolved.

We see people who are attracted to physical appearance and others who prefer to get to know someone’s personality. Usually, we need a mixture of the two to form a lasting relationship.

It also brings to mind the Coolidge effect, a phenomenon observed in rats and other animals, where novelty causes increased attraction. We see this on Love Island where someone claims to have met their dream partner until a new person is introduced and they find themselves attracted to them. Is this the Coolidge effect in action?

We also see this when using internet porn, the limitless images and videos cause us to seek novelty and because there is so much content, we never actually find it. This is a strong component in becoming addicted to Internet porn. With greater awareness of what’s happing in your brain, you may be able to observe your behaviour and gradually gain more control over it. When you are deep in the addiction, automatic responses take over and you feel as though you have no control at all.

If you think you may have a porn addiction or compulsive behaviour that is getting in the way of your life, start to educate yourself on what’s happening in your brain to cause you to keep returning to unwanted behaviour.

There are useful articles online as well as videos to watch (instead of porn!) and get to know yourself and why you are doing this from a neurological perspective. It’s another nudge in the right direction.

Here are some links to useful articles that might help you get started:
